Bulgaria holds presidential runoff amid Black Sea security concerns FAST-MOVING

Bulgarian citizens are voting in a presidential runoff election to choose a successor to Rumen Radev, who resigned in January 2026. The contest features two candidates with opposing foreign policy stances: acting President Iliana Yotova and former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov.

Yotova, who received approximately 35 percent of the vote in the first round, advocates for diplomatic dialogue with Moscow to end the war in Ukraine and opposes increased military aid to Kyiv. Gyurov, supported by pro-Western reformist parties, maintains a firm stance in support of Ukraine and seeks to strengthen Bulgaria’s role within NATO.

The election occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions following drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea. These incidents have raised maritime security concerns and prompted calls for international assistance.

In the first round, voter turnout reached a record low of approximately 23 percent. For the runoff, approximately 6.6 million citizens are eligible to vote, with voting machines deployed in 11,902 polling stations across the country and in 60 countries abroad.
