Bulgaria: Home Remedies and Safety Tips for Sunburn Relief

Mild to moderate sunburn can be alleviated with simple home treatments. Applying a cold compress made from a clean cloth soaked in cool (not icy) water for 10–15 minutes reduces inflammation and pain. Aloe vera gel, either from a fresh leaf or a high‑purity product, provides cooling, moisturizing and anti‑inflammatory benefits when applied several times a day. Chilled plain yogurt offers temporary relief due to its water and protein content, while oatmeal—used in a cool bath or as a paste—soothes itching as the skin begins to peel. Adequate hydration and the use of moisturizers containing glycerin, pan‑thenol, hyaluronic acid or ceramides support skin barrier recovery. Severe blistering, fever, nausea or signs of heatstroke require immediate medical attention.

Preventing sunburn is essential. Dermatologists advise limiting direct exposure to UV radiation to before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m., as UV intensity peaks between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Broad‑spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (SPF 50+ for beach or high‑altitude settings) should be applied using the “two‑finger” rule to the face and neck and reapplied every two hours, or sooner after swimming or towel‑drying. Additional protective measures include wide‑brim hats, UPF clothing, UV‑filter sunglasses, and carrying water for hydration. Infants under six months should not be exposed to direct sunlight; children should use SPF 50+ products, protective clothing and hats.
