Bulgaria joins eurozone on Jan 1 2026, boosting financial stability
Bulgaria became a member of the euro area on 1 January 2026, ending the use of the lev and adopting the euro. The change is presented as a sign of confidence in the country's financial system after years of fiscal discipline and institutional reforms.
Eurozone membership gives Bulgaria access to the European Central Bank’s mechanisms, lowers country risk and is expected to improve financing conditions for businesses by eliminating currency‑exchange costs and providing more stable loan rates. Direct foreign investment is reported to have risen to about 0.7 % of projected GDP, up from 0.4 % the previous year, and more than 64 % of Bulgarian exports already go to EU markets. The banking sector invested over €200 million in preparation, updating technology, logistics and staff training in partnership with the Bulgarian National Bank and the Ministry of Finance.
