Bulgaria lags in drone and anti-drone technology, says defense official
Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Defense Committee in the Bulgarian National Assembly, has acknowledged that Bulgaria is lagging behind in the acquisition and use of drones and anti-drone systems. He stated that closing this gap will take months or even years due to the necessary procedures for approving, concluding, and ratifying defense contracts.
Bulgaria's defense investment program through 2032 includes nine projects, some of which will be funded via the European SAFE mechanism. These projects involve 3D radars, Stryker armored vehicles, and other equipment for ground forces. Additionally, Bulgaria has joined a NATO initiative to acquire drone and anti-drone technologies and to train operators.
Regarding recent maritime incidents in the Black Sea, Lalov noted that while risks to national security are increasing due to the nearby war, the country's security is not currently under direct threat. He clarified that the recent incident involving two ships occurred in the exclusive economic zone rather than Bulgarian territorial waters.
