Bulgaria launches inspections of imported grapes

Bulgaria's Ministry of Agriculture and Food has launched large-scale inspections regarding the import of grapes and other seasonal fruits and vegetables. Minister Plamen Abrovski announced that the oversight, conducted in coordination with the Customs Agency and the National Revenue Agency, aims to verify the origin, documentation, and declared prices of imported goods.

Currently, much of the grape supply for Bulgarian wine production originates from Turkey. The ministry is engaging in discussions with foreign administrations to ensure price accuracy and prevent irregularities. Additionally, a 100 percent phytosanitary control measure involving laboratory analysis is being implemented to ensure all imports meet national quality standards.

During a visit to wineries in the Melnik, Petrich, and Sandanski regions to mark the start of the grape harvest, Abrovski emphasized the importance of linking viticulture with tourism to boost local economies. While noting increased investment interest in certain areas like Melnik, he also highlighted a general decline in total vineyard areas across the country.
