Bulgaria links demographic strategy to labor market adaptation
Bulgarian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Natia Efremova stated that adapting to demographic changes must be directly linked to the labor market. Speaking at a conference regarding the World Bank’s interim assessment of Bulgaria’s demographic strategy, Efremova emphasized that as the population ages, human capital will become increasingly valuable.
The Minister highlighted the need for policies that keep individuals active, productive, and motivated for social inclusion, regardless of age, skill gaps, or health limitations. Key priorities for the Ministry include supporting parenthood and families through budgetary investments and promoting flexible forms of employment to help balance work and family life.
Efremova noted that demographic policy is a national priority involving decisions by young people to remain in the country and the choices families make regarding children. She suggested that an aging population should be viewed not only as a challenge to social systems but also as an opportunity.
