Bulgaria Ministry of Finance maintains daily talks with European Commission
The Bulgarian Ministry of Finance is engaged in daily communication with the European Commission regarding an excessive deficit procedure initiated against the country in July 2026. While the Ministry is coordinating closely with Brussels to align with the European Semester framework, it emphasized that the authority to allocate public funds remains strictly within Bulgaria's jurisdiction.
The European Commission is currently reviewing Bulgaria's 2027 budget proposal, which was submitted on October 15. An official assessment is expected on November 24. This process follows a recommendation from the Council of the European Union for Bulgaria to implement corrective measures to limit net public expenditure growth.
Vice Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov indicated that the 2027 state budget draft may be presented as early as next week, depending on the conclusion of current discussions with the Commission and the finalization of the draft to ensure compliance with national and international commitments.
