Boyko Borisov proposes fuel VAT cut and export ban

Boyko Borisov, leader of the GERB party, has proposed several measures to combat rising fuel prices and a potential diesel shortage in Bulgaria. During a meeting with farmers in Silistra, Borisov called for an end to oil exports, an increase in state reserves, and a temporary reduction of VAT on fuels from 20% to 9%. He argued that such a move could lower diesel and gasoline prices by approximately 40 euro cents per liter.

Borisov criticized the current administration, led by Prime Minister Rumen Radev, for lifting the ban on oil exports, which he claims leaves the domestic market vulnerable to international supply shortages. He also warned of a growing national debt and criticized government spending.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Alexander Pulev stated that the government has already implemented measures, such as excise duties and direct subsidies, which have helped keep diesel prices below the 2-euro per liter threshold. Pulev noted that while the government is considering VAT adjustments, any changes must be mathematically evaluated due to their significant impact on public finances. Lukoil Neftohim Burgas reported that there is currently no risk of a diesel shortage, noting that monthly production remains higher than domestic consumption.
