Bulgaria Ends Dual Price Labels, Euro Only from Aug 9

A one‑year mandatory period of dual price labeling in lev and euro ends on 8 August 2026. From 9 August 2026 all merchants in Bulgaria must display prices exclusively in euros; they may optionally show the lev equivalent for information, but the euro amount is the legally binding price. The fixed conversion rate is 1 euro = 1.95583 lev, with rounding to two decimal places.

Consumer‑price oversight shifts to the Commission for Consumer Protection (KZP), while the National Revenue Agency (NAP) continues to focus on tax‑related violations. Penalties for unjustified price increases range from €10,000 to €100,000. Banks will keep offering free lev‑to‑euro exchange services until the end of 2026, with larger cash exchanges requiring prior notice.

Retail chains are adapting, e.g., BILLA Bulgaria will start showing euro‑only prices on electronic shelf labels from 10 August, with promotional material updated by 13 August. The change follows the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, which entered force on 8 August 2025.
