Bulgaria plans new management model for water and sewerage sector

water and sewerage sector infrastructure management Bulgaria water utility operators investment planning

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works is initiating a new management model for the water and sewerage (ViK) sector to reduce accidents and water loss. Deputy Minister Pavleta Pelovska announced at the annual Bulakva conference that the ministry has begun a complex analysis of the current state of water and sewerage operators.

The proposed strategy includes the passportization of every company in the sector. This process is intended to identify real risks and prioritize necessary management and capital investments. Pelovska emphasized the need to view the sector as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated problems.

The ministry aims to build an analytical environment that integrates technical, operational, and resource data. This unified approach is designed to allow for spatial analysis to identify critical sectors and high-risk settlements. Furthermore, the new system will enable forecasting and modeling of development scenarios over 5, 10, and 20-year periods to support informed decision-making.
