Iliyana Yotova faces criticism over UN Ukraine statement
Bulgarian President Iliyana Yotova is facing political criticism following her participation in the UN General Assembly regarding a joint statement on the war in Ukraine. Yotova clarified that while Bulgaria supports European unity, she declined to participate in a group photograph with 40 other nations because the document—which she described as an informal statement rather than an official UN resolution—did not sufficiently reflect Bulgaria’s specific position. She emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict and called for immediate diplomatic negotiations and the inclusion of all parties.
Asen Vassilev, leader of the 'We Continue the Change' party, criticized the President’s actions as an 'absolute mistake' that undermines Bulgaria’s international prestige. Vassilev argued that the President should prioritize national interests over electoral concerns and suggested that the discrepancy between the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs creates confusion. Members of the 'Progressive Bulgaria' party also commented, noting that the debate appears to be driven by political speculation ahead of upcoming elections.
