Bulgaria presidential elections: Candidates emerge as costs rise

As the October 25 presidential elections approach in Bulgaria, political parties are finalizing their candidates. Notable announcements include President Iliana Yotova, who will run via an initiative committee with support from Progressive Bulgaria and BSP. Other candidates include Nikolay Nanev (BZNS) for president and Tsveta Kirilova for vice president, as well as Ivan Hristanov. The MECH party has nominated Radostin Vasilev for president and Krasimir Manov for vice president. Additionally, the initiative committee ‘Narodna Sila’ has nominated Georgi Dimov for president and General Dimitar Shivikov for vice president.

On the right, discussions continue regarding a joint candidacy, with former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov being frequently mentioned. The ‘Continue the Change’ party has expressed readiness to support him.

Regarding election logistics, the Central Election Commission (CEC) noted that the upcoming elections are expected to be more expensive than previous ones. This increase is attributed to potential two-round voting, rising transportation costs, and personnel salaries, which account for approximately 40% of the budget. The CEC also plans to conduct full diagnostics on voting machines and printers to ensure functionality. Furthermore, recent changes to the Election Code will allow voters in countries such as Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States to access more polling stations.
