Bulgaria holds presidential election amid Black Sea security concerns
Bulgarian citizens are voting in a presidential election featuring 27 candidates. The election is taking place against a backdrop of heightened regional tension following drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea, which reportedly killed approximately two dozen international seafarers. While the Bulgarian government has not explicitly blamed Russia, Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the outcome of the strikes “benefits the Russian Federation”.
Polling indicates a close race between two primary candidates with differing geopolitical stances. Iliana Iotova, the current acting president, leads the polls with approximately 41% to 47% support and has advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Andrey Gyurov, a former caretaker prime minister backed by pro-Western reformist parties, follows with roughly 28% to 30% support and maintains strong support for Ukraine and NATO.
Voting is being conducted both domestically and abroad, with 613 sections established in 60 countries. In Bulgaria, machine voting is utilized in sections with 300 or more voters. If no candidate secures an absolute majority, a second round of voting is scheduled for November 1.
