Bulgaria proposes major reduction in electronic waste product fees
Bulgaria's Ministry of Environment and Water has updated a draft ordinance to significantly reduce product fees for electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) waste. The proposal aims to create a more predictable and competitive environment for businesses by aligning national fees with average European Union levels.
The new rates are determined through a cost-oriented analysis that accounts for the actual expenses of collecting, transporting, pre-treating, and recycling various categories of electronic waste. The Ministry emphasized that while the financial instrument is being adjusted for cost-effectiveness, the existing environmental standards and requirements for waste collection, take-back, and recycling remain unchanged.
This move follows significant industry concern after product fees for certain appliances saw increases of 700-900% in 2025, which businesses argued were passed on to consumers. The updated draft has undergone public consultation and will be submitted to the Council of Ministers following an additional seven-day comment period.
