Bulgaria raises self‑employed health insurance contribution to €24.81 per month

From 1 August 2026, persons who pay their own health‑insurance contributions in Bulgaria – such as long‑term unemployed not receiving unemployment benefits – must pay €24.81 each month. The amount is calculated as 8 % of a minimum taxable income of €310.10, reflecting an increase in the minimum monthly taxable income for the self‑employed from €550.66 to €620.20. The maximum monthly taxable income also rises to €2,300.

Contributions are due by the 25th of the month following the period they cover; the August payment must be made by 25 September. Affected individuals must submit Declaration Form No. 7 to the National Revenue Agency (NRA) electronically (via the portal with a digital signature) or in person at an NRA office. The NRA warns that health‑insurance rights are suspended after more than three missed monthly payments within a 36‑month span, but can be restored after paying all overdue contributions for the last 60 months. Citizens can check their health‑insurance status through the NRA’s online service or a 24/7 phone line (0700 18 700).
