Bulgaria removes nearly 400 illegal water connections
State water operators and the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works have removed nearly 400 illegal connections to water supply systems during the first seven months of the year. In total, 892 illegal connections were identified in 2025 as part of efforts to reduce commercial water loss and ensure reliable distribution.
Infrastructure modernization is a primary focus to increase water security and mitigate shortages. In the Pleven region, over 6.3 km of new pipelines have been built by mid-2026, with an additional 9.5 km planned by year-end. By the end of 2027, approximately 30 km of water pipeline network worth nearly 1.9 million euros is scheduled for reconstruction and construction.
Other regional efforts include the modernization of the SCADA system and improved remote monitoring in Omurtag, real-time pressure monitoring in Turgovishte, and the completion of the Luda Yana reservoir infrastructure in Panagyurishte.
