Bulgaria reports critical drop in age of drug users

Experts in Bulgaria are reporting a critical decline in the age of drug users, with cases now involving children as young as 12. The Municipal Council on Narcotic Substances (OSNV) in Blagoevgrad confirmed that dozens of parents sought help for youth addicted to fentanyl over the past year.

A major threat identified is the practice of dealers mixing fentanyl with other substances because it is a cheaper, highly lethal option. This creates a significant risk for minors who may not realize the danger. Experts note that easy access to drugs via internet messaging makes adolescents particularly vulnerable. Common reasons cited by children for early drug use include curiosity, family issues, and depression.

In response to this trend, local prevention efforts have been organized, such as a traditional cycling tour in Sandanski promoting sports as an alternative to drug use.
