Bulgaria leads Europe in measles cases amid vaccination concerns

Bulgaria has recorded the highest number of measles cases in Europe, with 534 confirmed cases reported as of August 18. Health officials describe the situation as a smoldering epidemic that continues to accumulate new cases at a rate of approximately 20 per week. The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the Vratsa, Pleven, and Lovech regions.

A critical factor in the spread is the low vaccination rate and fraudulent documentation. Investigations by the National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD) reveal that over 60% of individuals who were documented as vaccinated but subsequently fell ill had actually not received the vaccine. Many others had only received a single dose, which does not provide sufficient long-term immunity.

Medical professionals have raised alarms regarding the legal and ethical implications of doctors or parents falsifying immunization records. Regional health authorities in Lovech have already issued dozens of sanctions against doctors, parents, and educational institutions for failing to maintain proper vaccination controls. Experts emphasize that high vaccination coverage is essential to protect vulnerable populations, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or living with immune deficiencies, who cannot be vaccinated themselves.
