Bulgaria reports significant rise in hospitalizations

Hospitalization rates in Bulgaria have seen a significant increase, with 100,000 more admissions reported in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year. Data from the National Health Insurance Fund as of June 30, 2026, indicates a 4.7% rise in hospitalizations.

While official reports attribute this trend to an aging population, virologist Professor Radka Argirova has expressed skepticism regarding the efficiency of system controls. She suggested that the use of funds through clinical pathways should be audited to verify the accuracy of these figures.

Regarding upcoming health concerns, the first influenza cases are expected in early October. Experts warn of respiratory viruses such as H1N1, parainfluenza, and adenovirus, with particular emphasis on the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which poses risks to children under five and the elderly. Vaccination is recommended between October 1 and October 15 to ensure optimal antibody protection.
