Bulgaria revokes license of Medicus Alpha hospital in Plovdiv

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health has revoked the medical license of Medicus Alpha hospital in Plovdiv. The decision follows inspections and a report from the Executive Agency Medical Supervision, which found that the private facility had been systematically performing medical activities outside the scope of its official state permit.

Authorities stated that the hospital provided treatment in several medical specialties for which it was not licensed, a practice deemed to jeopardize citizen safety. The Regional Health Inspection in Plovdiv is responsible for organizing the safe transfer of currently hospitalized patients to other medical facilities within the city.

The hospital management has 14 days to appeal the decision before the Administrative Court in Plovdiv, though an appeal does not halt the immediate cessation of medical activities or the relocation of patients.

The investigation into the hospital's operations was prompted by the death of a 6-year-old boy during a planned dental procedure under general anesthesia in April 2025. Family members and experts have raised concerns regarding potential medical errors, including the possibility of an excessive medication dosage.
