Bulgaria road barrier procurement scandal involves 1 billion lev halt
Bulgarian Regional Minister Ivan Shishkov has reported significant irregularities in public procurement contracts for the supply and installation of road barriers. Shishkov stated that in three regions of Southern Bulgaria, contract values exceeded the legal 50% increase threshold. In response to these findings, the government has halted a road barrier procurement process valued at approximately 1 billion levs.
The political party DPS has filed a signal with the prosecutor's office, alleging that a specific methodology used during the first caretaker government led to cost increases of over 160%. The party specifically identified the Plovdiv-based company Jupiter 05 Ltd in its complaint. Furthermore, the government has released data suggesting that approximately 5 million levs in flight expenses for the DPS leader were covered by a company linked to road barrier contractors.
Minister Shishkov dismissed the DPS's reaction as an attempt to protect damaged financial interests. To mitigate risks, the state-owned company Avtomagistrali is preparing to perform barrier replacements independently by purchasing its own machinery and staff.
