Bulgaria road experts warn of 'bitumplaning' after fatal accident on Trakia motorway

Road experts have identified aquaplaning as the most likely cause of a fatal accident on the Trakia motorway that killed an employee of the motorway management company. A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the incident.

In addition to water-related risks, the European Center for Transport Policy has warned of a phenomenon called ‘bitumplaning.’ This occurs when bitumen rises to the surface of the road during hot weather, creating an extremely slippery layer on even dry pavement. This substance significantly reduces tire grip, potentially making the surface more dangerous than during standard aquaplaning.

Factors contributing to frequent accidents in the Vladiya area include compromised road surfaces, inadequate drainage, and excessive speed. The Road Infrastructure Agency has acknowledged reduced traction on the section and stated that repairs are planned to restore safety to the road surface.
