Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece plan joint transport infrastructure projects

Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece are preparing joint infrastructure project applications for the 2026 call under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2021-2027. These initiatives focus on the Black Sea-Aegean and Rhine-Danube European transport corridors, aiming to enhance connectivity between the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea, and the Danube.

Under the Cohesion Package, planned projects include pre-feasibility studies for the Mihaylovo-Dimitrovgrad railway section and the construction of the Lyubimets-Svilengrad-Greek border railway line. The Military Mobility Package includes the expansion of the Struma motorway to the Kulata border crossing, a study for the Veliko Tarnovo-Nikolaevo-Maritsa motorway, and the electrification of the railway section between the Danube Bridge and Ruse Triaz Station.

Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas emphasized that these strategic corridors, connecting northern Greek ports with Bulgarian and Romanian ports, are vital for European logistics and trade. MEP Gheorghe Falcă noted that such connectivity is essential for regional security, enabling the rapid movement of resources and equipment along the EU and NATO eastern flank.
