Bulgaria expands free flu vaccination program for seniors and children

Bulgaria is preparing for the 2026-2027 flu season with a significant expansion of its national vaccination program. The Ministry of Health has announced that 770,000 doses of influenza vaccine are expected, including 490,000 doses specifically for individuals aged 65 and older. For the first time, the program includes free vaccinations for children aged 6 months to 7 years, as well as children up to 17 years old with chronic conditions.

Medical professionals have expressed concerns that vaccine supplies may not meet the high demand, noting that previous years saw shortages. While the state has funded over 135,000 doses for children, current contracts cover approximately 98,000. Additionally, over 180,000 doses are available on the free market.

In addition to influenza, the Ministry of Health reported that 31,680 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses are expected by the end of the year to combat rising infection rates. Health officials noted a recent increase in acute respiratory infections, warning that the country is on the threshold of the flu season. Vaccination is recommended during October and November to ensure maximum protection.
