Bulgaria secures second place in EU summer tourism season

Eurostat data for 2025 show that 43 % of all overnight stays in Bulgaria were recorded in the two peak months of July and August. This places Bulgaria in second position among EU member states for summer tourism, behind Croatia, which recorded a 55 % share, and ahead of Greece at 42 %. The EU average seasonality stands at 31 %.

The concentration of tourist activity in the summer creates heightened pressure on accommodation capacity, infrastructure and labour during the peak period, while demand remains markedly lower for the rest of the year. August was the most visited month across the EU with 501 million overnight stays (16 % of the annual total), followed by July with 460 million (15 %). Analysts note that extending the tourist season beyond the traditional summer months would help alleviate peak‑season strain and improve year‑round utilisation of tourism assets.
