Bulgaria and Qatar discuss restoring Sofia–Doha flight route
Bulgarian Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev and Deputy Minister Hristina Velinova met with the Qatari Ambassador to Bulgaria, Fahad Ibrahim Al-Mushairi, to discuss restoring direct flights between Sofia and Doha.
The route, previously operated by Qatar Airways for 15 years, saw its last direct flight in February 2026. The airline cited operational reasons and the complex situation in the Middle East for the suspension. Qatar Airways has indicated a willingness to conduct necessary analyses to explore the possibility of resuming the service.
Minister Peev emphasized that restoring the connection is of strategic importance for Bulgaria’s international connectivity, noting its potential to stimulate tourism, business, and investment. Additionally, the two sides discussed cooperation within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), with Qatar supporting Bulgaria’s candidacy for re-election to the ITU Council for the 2027–2030 mandate.
