Bulgaria seeks technology transfer in Rheinmetall defense deal
The Bulgarian government is actively structuring an investment project with the German defense group Rheinmetall. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investment and Industry Alexander Pulev stated that the government will insist on a full technology transfer and the creation of high-quality jobs within the VMZ facilities.
During discussions with the Rheinmetall delegation, a new potential location near Burgas was proposed. This site is owned by the Ministry of Defense and possesses the necessary infrastructure. To expedite the process, the government intends to declare the site of national importance and national security, allowing for an accelerated administrative procedure.
Beyond gunpowder production, the parties are discussing additional investment opportunities in satellite technologies, drones, anti-drone systems, and logistics or transport vehicles. A final decision on one of three alternative investment directions is expected within the month following consultations with Rheinmetall.
