Bulgaria sees rising diesel prices and spikes in car safety equipment costs

Bulgaria is experiencing price fluctuations in essential driver supplies, affecting both fuel and vehicle safety equipment.

Diesel prices in Bulgaria have risen by nearly 18% in a single month, creating a gap of approximately 24 euro cents between diesel and gasoline. Dimitar Hadzhidimitrov of the Association of Bulgarian Fuel Traders, Manufacturers, Importers and Carriers attributed this to a shortage of specific crude oil types that refineries are designed to process. The shift from Ural crude to more expensive alternatives, combined with reduced refining capacity in Europe—where approximately 20 refineries have closed over five years—has driven up costs. Diesel accounts for 70% of fuel consumption in Bulgaria.

Separately, a surge in demand for DIN 13164:2022 standard first aid kits has caused prices to spike in Bulgaria. Following rumors regarding strict enforcement of new equipment requirements in Greece, Bulgarian kits are being sold for around 30 euros, whereas identical kits in Greece can be found on promotion for between 4.90 and 5.60 euros. Greek authorities have noted that enforcement of penalties for non-compliant equipment has been postponed until January 1, 2027.
