Bulgaria seizes 20 firearms from foreigners at Kapitan Andreyevo crossing

On 15 July, Bulgarian border police at the Kapitan Andreyevo checkpoint stopped a Turkish‑registered bus traveling from Turkey to Poland. Two foreign passengers left two leather backpacks in a trash bin before passport control; officers retrieved the bags and discovered 20 handguns. A large hidden compartment in the bus was found empty during a joint police‑customs inspection. The suspects have been charged with illegal weapons trafficking and a pre‑trial investigation has been opened.

Separately, the General Directorate of Border Police reported a surge in light‑vehicle traffic entering Bulgaria from Turkey and Serbia, especially at the Kapitan Andreyevo, Malko Tarnovo and Kalotina checkpoints. Travelers are advised to allow extra time and follow staff instructions. Traffic at the borders with North Macedonia and Greece remains normal, and the Danube bridge near Ruse‑Gurigovo has fully reopened after repairs, while the Oriahovo‑Beket ferry remains suspended due to low river levels.
