Bulgaria summer tourism falls 9% in 2026 as German visitors drop
Bulgaria’s tourism sector reported a 9% decline in foreign visitor arrivals during the 2026 summer season. The shift in source markets saw Poland become the leading source of tourists to the Black Sea resorts, overtaking Germany, which fell to fourth place behind the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.
Industry leaders, including Ivan Groshev, president of the Association of Travel Agencies, blamed structural issues such as limited air connectivity, a rise in last‑minute bookings and high accommodation prices. They called for stronger government backing for scheduled and charter flights and a more effective national tourism strategy.
While the loss of roughly 200,000 foreign tourists hurt the sector, a surge in domestic travellers and visitors from neighbouring Romania helped mitigate the shortfall. The internal market showed strong weekend demand (full occupancy on Fridays to Sundays) but weaker weekday occupancy (50‑60%). Several Eastern‑European countries – Romania, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia – have jointly asked the EU for assistance to address the broader regional tourism decline.
