Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency faces tax crackdown and bribery scandal

The National Revenue Agency (NAP) intensified tax inspections in the Plovdiv region, issuing warnings to 68 commercial premises – including restaurants, cafés, kiosks and fuel stations – that they could be sealed for violations of the Value‑Added Tax Law. The sweep follows a previous operation in Stoilipinovo that resulted in sanctions against dozens of establishments.

Separately, two NAP inspectors were detained after allegedly demanding a €300 bribe from the owner of a minimarket in the seaside resort of Cherno Morets. The inspectors were placed on temporary suspension pending a disciplinary investigation and could face up to six years in prison. Agency officials stressed a zero‑tolerance stance toward corruption and praised the citizen who reported the incident.
