Bulgaria to expand toll cameras to photograph heavy trucks in overtaking lane

The National Toll Management agency in Bulgaria will activate a new toll‑camera function on 1 July 2026 that can detect heavy trucks travelling in the overtaking lane where it is prohibited. The system will create an evidence record containing several photographs of the vehicle (front, rear and a panoramic view) together with the date, time, location, lane, vehicle class and instantaneous speed. The functionality will first be deployed on 15 highway sections – twelve on the Trakia motorway in the Stara Zagora, Pazardzhik and Yambol regions and three on the Hemus motorway in the Shumen region. Collected evidence will be forwarded to the Ministry of the Interior for enforcement actions. The measure aims to improve road safety during the busy summer traffic period by limiting illegal overtaking by heavy‑goods vehicles.
