Tsar Samuel's remains returned to Bulgaria from Greece

After decades of negotiations, the remains of medieval Bulgarian ruler Tsar Samuel have been returned from Greece to Bulgaria. The handover ceremony took place in Thessaloniki, attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. As part of a mutual cultural exchange agreement, Bulgaria is returning 48 religious artifacts to Greece that had been removed during World War I.

The remains arrived in Sofia via military aircraft, escorted by Bulgarian Air Force fighter jets. A state ceremony in Sofia included a procession to the Saint Sophia Basilica, where the remains were placed in a marble sarcophagus. The event was marked by a 21-gun salute and the national anthem. While the repatriation is celebrated as a historic moment of national unity and a bridge between the two nations, some historians have noted that the identification of the remains lacks definitive DNA confirmation.
