Bulgaria to host regional connectivity summit to boost European security

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova stated in Strasbourg that Bulgaria can play a key role in Europe’s geostrategic positioning by developing transport, energy, and digital connections. This follows an announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that Bulgaria will host a Regional Connectivity Summit.

Petrova noted that the country’s geographic location is a significant advantage that has not yet been fully utilized. She emphasized that connectivity is a strategic investment in Europe’s security, competitiveness, and future, especially given the current complex security environment and the need to reduce economic dependencies.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos identified Bulgaria as a vital factor in building new links between Europe and the Black Sea region, Turkey, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Middle East. A key project mentioned is Corridor VIII, a major railway link between the Adriatic and Black Seas.
