Bulgaria to increase roadside control points for cargo transport

Bulgarian authorities have agreed to increase the number of roadside control points for goods in transit. This decision was reached during a coordination meeting involving heads of key institutions, including the Customs Agency, the National Revenue Agency, the Border Police, and the National Toll Administration.

The expanded inspections are part of compensatory measures following Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen Area. These “road stop” checks on heavy goods vehicles are concentrated at designated sites on major internal highways, following the transformation of former internal border points into standard border crossings.

The primary objectives of these intensified controls are to combat illegal migration, the shadow economy, excise duty violations, and smuggling of goods from both EU member states and third countries. The coordinated effort aims to provide comprehensive oversight while minimizing delays for compliant economic operators.
