Bulgaria to tighten tax controls on agricultural imports
The Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the National Revenue Agency (NAP) have agreed to implement stricter controls on the import of agricultural products to prevent tax evasion and market manipulation.
Minister of Agriculture Plamen Abrovski reported that producers have flagged discrepancies where the purchase price in a country of origin differs from the value declared upon entering Bulgaria. One specific example cited was the import of grapes from Greece, where products were allegedly purchased at a lower price but declared at a higher value.
NAP Executive Director Boris Mihaylov stated that inspections of cargo vehicles and small vans have been intensified. For imports from EU member states, the agency will verify tax documents and invoices, requesting confirmation from the respective country's tax administration when necessary. The agency currently maintains an information exchange partnership with Greek tax authorities.
Additionally, officials discussed the potential mandatory use of fiscal devices for individuals registered as agricultural producers who engage in commercial activities. This measure aims to prevent the misuse of agricultural registration to mask standard commercial operations. The enhanced oversight is intended to be fully effective by the start of the next season in March.
