Bulgaria urges EU to increase geopolitical effectiveness
During the Gymnich informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova called for the European Union to become a more effective geopolitical actor. She emphasized that the EU must move beyond being a mere observer and instead actively participate in finding solutions to crises in its immediate neighborhood.
Key discussions at the meeting focused on the war in Ukraine and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Petrova advocated for enhanced coordination between the European External Action Service, EU institutions, and member states to strengthen diplomatic efforts toward sustainable peace.
Regarding energy security, Petrova highlighted the importance of the Vertical Gas Corridor, noting Bulgaria’s leading role in the project as a means to diversify gas supplies and reduce energy dependency within Europe.
