Bulgaria water crisis: Aging networks cause 60% water loss
Bulgaria is facing a severe water crisis driven by aging infrastructure, with average water losses through the national network exceeding 60%. According to regulatory data, some regions suffer even higher rates of waste. Pernik and Shumen provinces reported losses exceeding 83%, while Sliven reached 81.39%, and Pleven reported losses over 71%.
This systemic leakage has forced numerous settlements into near-constant water rationing. The Veliko Tarnovo region is particularly affected, with 16 settlements currently under rationing regimes. In the village of Resen, the largest in the region, residents have endured water restrictions for 14 years. Although spring rainfall eased restrictions this summer, daily infrastructure failures continue to disrupt supply.
A proposed 15 million euro project to replace the 40-kilometer water network in Resen has faced another year of funding delays, leaving residents to deal with frequent pipe bursts and inconsistent service.
