Bulgarian activist denied entry to Serbia over Karamannica mine concerns

Bulgarian physician and activist Dr. Valentin Yanev was denied entry into Serbia by border authorities, preventing his participation in an environmental roundtable in Bosilegrad. Serbian officials cited a “negative risk assessment for national security” as the reason for the 24-hour entry ban.

Dr. Yanev, a member of the Western Provinces Scientific Institute, intended to present a report regarding the potential reopening of the Karamannica lead and zinc mine. His research highlights risks of transboundary pollution, noting that heavy metal contamination in water sources near the mine affects both Serbian and Bulgarian territories, specifically the Kyustendil region.

The report includes findings on soil and water contamination and links previous mining activities to increased rates of oncological diseases in the area. Dr. Yanev warned that resuming operations at the Karamannica mine could pose significant health and environmental risks to local populations and agriculture across the border.
