Bulgarian advocacy groups and experts debate gambling advertising ban
The National Network for Children and the Parents Association in Bulgaria are advocating for a total ban on all forms of gambling advertising to protect minors. They have submitted a position to the Ministry of Finance regarding proposed amendments to the Gambling Act, emphasizing that current drafts contain loopholes that allow gambling brands to remain present through sports sponsorship, branding on equipment, and naming rights for tournaments or facilities.
The Network argues that sports should not serve as a marketing showcase for gambling and calls for an explicit ban on gambling branding in youth sports and on national teams. They also oppose linking the funding of educational and health activities to advertising rights from gambling companies.
Conversely, sports journalists and legal experts have raised concerns regarding the economic and regulatory impact of a ban. Experts note that gambling operators are major sponsors for Bulgaria’s professional football leagues and various clubs, meaning a ban could significantly impact sports financing. Furthermore, legal experts warn that prohibiting advertising for licensed operators may make it difficult for consumers to distinguish between legal entities and illegal, unregulated websites.
