Bulgarian Air Force utilizes F-16s for aerial intelligence gathering
Bulgaria's Air Force is currently utilizing its F-16 aircraft for aerial information gathering while preparing for full combat duty. Major General Nikolay Rusev, commander of the Air Force, stated that the aircraft will enter combat patrols once they are 100% equipped, though a definitive timeline for this transition remains uncertain.
The transition to the F-16 Block 70 fleet faces several challenges. While the first eight aircraft are in the country, the remaining eight are not expected until 2030. Additionally, the Air Force is working to complete critical infrastructure, such as the F-16 simulator and specialized service buildings. Pilot training is progressing, with 11 pilots expected to be trained by the end of the year and 15 by April 2027.
Until the F-16 fleet is fully operational, Bulgaria continues to rely on its MiG-29 fleet for airspace protection. The maintenance of these Soviet-era jets is currently dependent on Poland, which serves as the sole source for spare parts and repairs. The MiG-29s are expected to remain in service until their resources are exhausted around 2030.
