Bulgarian authorities dismantle ritualistic group in Plovdiv region

Bulgarian security services, including DANS and the Ministry of Interior, have dismantled a group in the Plovdiv region, specifically near Kalofere, that was practicing unconventional rituals using psychotropic substances. The group was reportedly led by a Spanish citizen who presented himself as a spiritual mediator with ‘higher spirits’ and a bearer of ancient spiritual knowledge. Authorities allege he used psychological manipulation and the administration of psychoactive substances to maintain control over his followers.

During the operation, investigators seized approximately 30 pots of cacti containing psychotropic substances, as well as bottles of dark liquid and fungi suspected of containing psychoactive ingredients. The Spanish national has been charged by the Plovdiv District Prosecutor's Office for possession of high-risk narcotic substances with intent to distribute. Investigators are also examining whether followers were coerced into transferring assets, such as vehicles or property, to the group, though no crimes regarding property transfer have been established at this stage.

Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev stated that intelligence suggests other similar groups may be operating within Bulgaria. He emphasized that authorities are working to identify and neutralize such organizations in their early stages to prevent more serious consequences. Fourteen Bulgarian citizens who were members of the group have been questioned as witnesses.
