Bulgarian authorities launch joint inspections into retail food markups

Bulgarian regulatory agencies, including the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), the National Revenue Agency (NRA), and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), have launched a coordinated investigation into the central warehouses of major retail chains. The operation aims to trace the supply chain and investigate significant price markups on essential goods.

Preliminary findings from the CPC reveal extreme markups on dairy products, with butter reaching 135% and fresh milk at 99%. Other products, such as cheese, have shown markups up to 95%. The CPC has already initiated 11 administrative proceedings regarding unjustified price increases and misleading commercial practices.

The investigation also addresses allegations of discrimination against local producers. The CPC has referred a signal to the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) regarding discriminatory markups, noting that different markups are being applied to comparable products from different suppliers within the same category.

Retailers found in violation of competition laws could face fines of up to 10% of their annual turnover. For unjustified price increases, fines may range from 10,000 to 100,000 euros per product. The inspections, which began at central warehouses, are scheduled to expand to other links in the supply chain starting next week.
