Food safety and tax authorities increase inspections in Bulgaria and Romania

Regulatory authorities in Bulgaria and Romania have intensified inspections targeting food safety and fiscal compliance.

In Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) conducted over 2,200 inspections in one week, resulting in the suspension of three facilities and the destruction of approximately 790 kg of animal and non-animal products due to expired dates or lack of labeling. Additionally, joint operations between the BFSA and the National Revenue Agency (NAP) in Kyustendil uncovered 51,000 products lacking Bulgarian labels. At the Gyueshevo border crossing, over two tons of yogurt from North Macedonia were seized and returned due to certification discrepancies.

In Romania, the Argeș Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) issued 19 sanctions following 418 inspections. Notably, a Profi supermarket in Bascov was fined 10,000 lei after four members of the national canoe-kayak team required hospitalization following the consumption of hot dogs.

In Bulgaria, the NAP also increased fiscal oversight in Veliko Tarnovo ahead of national holidays, identifying 20 violations related to cash register compliance and missing receipts.
