Bulgarian border police destroy over 3 tons of cannabis

Bulgarian border police have destroyed over 3.2 tons of cannabis plants discovered during specialized operations in the Pirin and Ograzhden mountains. Using helicopters and ground teams, officers identified a large plantation covering approximately 1,600 square meters in the Sugarevo area, Sandanski municipality. This site contained 1,546 cannabis plants, weighing a total of 3,215 kg, with heights ranging between 120 and 230 centimeters.

In a separate operation in the Ograzhden mountains near Baskaltsi, Petrich municipality, aerial surveillance located an additional 28 kg of cannabis plants. All discovered crops were destroyed by burning in the presence of an official commission.

Authorities have initiated pre-trial proceedings in both cases. Additionally, prosecutors are investigating a fire in the Ilindentsi area, Strumyani municipality, to determine if it was an intentional act to destroy cannabis crops following reports of upcoming police activity.
