Bulgarian politics: GERB internal tensions and court testimony on Borisov arrests
In Bulgaria, political tensions are rising within the GERB party following several developments. Stara Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov has presented a signed resignation and requested a vote of confidence from the party. This move follows his public endorsement of presidential candidate Iliyana Yotova, which caused friction within GERB.
GERB leader Boyko Borisov addressed the internal friction, stating that the party's decision not to field its own presidential candidate was a strategic move to disrupt political reciprocity between opponents. Borisov defended the individual choices of party members and invited presidential candidate Andrey Gyurov to present his platform to the party.
Separately, court testimony has surfaced regarding the 2022 arrests of Boyko Borisov and other officials. Yavor Simov, former head of the Ministry of Interior's press center, testified that then-Interior Ministry Secretary General Petar Todorov was not informed of the arrests in advance. Simov further alleged that former Finance Minister Asen Vasilev personally dictated the initial press release regarding the investigation by the European Prosecutor's Office.
