Bulgarian courts oversee trials for fatal pedestrian accidents
Two separate legal proceedings regarding fatal pedestrian accidents in Bulgaria are currently drawing significant attention.
In Plovdiv, Ivan Sotirov, a regional manager for Grupa Insurance, is facing charges for the February 2024 death of 79-year-old judicial expert Vesa Rizova. Sotirov is accused of driving a Mercedes C240 at speeds exceeding 60 km/h and failing to yield to the pedestrian on a crosswalk. While Sotirov has admitted to the facts of the indictment, his defense requested that the trial proceed behind closed doors to protect his public image and privacy regarding his health. The court has adjourned the case until October 26 to allow for additional evidence.
In Sofia, the trial concerning the 2023 death of 14-year-old Philip Arsov has been ordered to restart. The decision follows a recusal of the previous judicial panel after the family of the victim protested against perceived bias. The family expressed frustration after the court reclassified the charge from a crime committed with 'eventual intent' to one committed through 'negligence.' Relatives held a protest before the Sofia Court Palace, calling for accountability and a verdict that serves as a lesson for others.
