Bulgarian Food Safety Agency seizes nearly 5 tonnes of unsafe food

On 26 June, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BABH) confiscated almost 5 tonnes of food deemed unsafe during inspections in Sofia, Plovdiv and Burgas. Violations included expired dates, incorrect labeling, missing traceability documents and improper storage. In Sofia, 331 kg of imitation products, cheese and cottage cheese were seized, and a further 4,630 kg of animal and non‑animal origin food past its expiry date was ordered destroyed. Inspections in Plovdiv targeted a butter‑packaging plant, where samples were taken for laboratory testing. In Burgas, officials found cross‑contamination of production streams and storage deficiencies, issuing corrective orders. Separate checks in Haskovo uncovered about 500 kg of pork meat with an expired shelf‑life and 150 kg of by‑products stored in an unsuitable refrigerator; the entire batch was seized for destruction and the operator was served with an administrative violation notice.
