Bulgarian football coaches highlight lack of professionalism in youth development

Svetoslav Petrov, the coach of the Bulgaria U17 national team, has identified a lack of professionalism and work ethic as a primary obstacle for young Bulgarian football talents. Speaking on a Bulgarian Football Union podcast, Petrov noted that players moving to foreign academies experience a significant shift in discipline, including longer training sessions and daily fitness routines that are often absent in domestic settings.

Petrov emphasized that the transition from youth to senior football is a critical period that determines a player's career trajectory. He observed that players from the 2010 age group who moved abroad reported a stark difference in the intensity and structure of their training compared to what they experienced in Bulgaria.

In a separate commentary, former national player Martin Petrov expressed frustration with the repetitive cycle of failures within the Bulgarian football community. While acknowledging recent positive performances from youth teams and the European progress of clubs like CSKA and Levski, he criticized the lack of tangible structural changes and effective measures from the football union to prevent recurring issues.
