Bulgarian government approves additional funding for Ministry of Interior and Rila Monastery

The Bulgarian government has approved additional budget expenditures for 2026, targeting both national security infrastructure and cultural preservation.

For the Ministry of Interior, over 71 million euros have been allocated. The largest portion, approximately 63.5 million euros, is designated for a centralized system for the personalization of Bulgarian identity documents. Additionally, 4.5 million euros will fund urgent repairs to an engineering facility and adjacent road along the Bulgarian-Turkish border, while roughly 3 million euros will cover existing commitments related to the issuance of identity documents.

In the cultural sector, the Cabinet approved 263,000 euros for the Rila Monastery. These funds will be provided to the Bulgarian Patriarchate for renovation, restoration activities, and the installation of a modern fire alarm system. This funding comes ahead of an upcoming visit by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to the monastery in October.
